Red Chevron

red chevron maxi dress
{Forever 21 dress, H&M belt, Shoemint "Kellie" sandals, Express bangles, Fringe stone bangles, gifted wire ring}

For the longest time I have shied away from any clothing that was floor length; I just never felt confident enough to wear a maxi dress or skirt due to my short stature and pear shaped body. My mom has told me for years that I just need to give more things a try before I reject them, so I started off slow and purchased a maxi skirt a year ago, which I have grown to love as a staple year around piece. I found this dress this past weekend while shopping with my cousin who is visiting from Poland and instantly decided that it was time to jump in full force and add a maxi dress to my wardrobe. I love everything about this dress including the color, pattern, and the easy breezy mood it puts me in. So I guess my mom is right, don't knock it until you've tried it!

Little Bow, Peep Toe

navy modcloth dress
{Modcloth dress (old), Manolo Blahnik "Clausado" pumps, M2 Boutique necklace, handmade wire ring bought at One Salon}

This past weekend I decided to make the trip back up to Michigan to visit my family and attend so many wonderful family events that just happened to be taking place that weekend. My little brother turned 21 (makes me feel old), Nina's sister graduated high school (Go Lisa!), and my cousin Donna had her bridal shower. I packed so much into the few days that I was home; I feel like I need a long relaxing vacation!

For the day full of festivities, I decided to wear an old yet super comfortable dress that could easily be tweaked for each party. I wore my new Manolo Blahnik pumps out to dinner and to the bridal shower, then changed into sandals for the open house. I'm still exhausted from all the excitement but it was the much needed re-charge I was looking for to really kickstart my summer!

DIY: Letter Art

diy letter art

Even though I moved into my apartment two months ago, I haven't even begun the decorating process. While I really like the space I live in, I'm finally starting to make some attempt at decorating my personal space. A few weeks ago, I found canvas letter art at Home Goods and decided that making my own DIY version would be my first home decor project. I decided that I wanted the word LOVE spelled out above my headboard in my bedroom. I'm not sure if that's where I'll keep it or if I'll keep it in hung in a straight row, however for the time being it's a start! Check out how to make your own DIY canvas letters below!

Equipment:
- canvas
- scrapbook paper for letter & background
- scissors
- modge podge
- foam brush

Note: I wish I had painted my canvas a neutral color before modge podging the scrap paper to it. I suggest you do this to allow the letter to stand out.

Step One:
Lay out your canvas and coat it with a thin later of mode podge. Place your background scrapbook page directly on top of the canvas, then coat the top of the page with an additional thin layer of modge podge. Set aside to try for about 2 hours.

Step Two:
While your canvas is drying in the background; take your remaining scrapbook pages and cut out your letters. I actually printed out my letters in my favorite font on the outline setting and traced that on top of the scrapbook paper to ensure that they were all the same size.

Step Three:
Once your canvas is dry, place your first letter on top of your canvas and brush another thin layer of modge podge over the whole canvas. Continue layering the rest of your letters, one letter her canvas.
After about 20 minutes, add another additional layer to really seal the picture. Let your canvases dry for 24 hours before you start to hang your photos in your desired location.

I have chosen a black/white with lime green accented decor for my bedroom, therefore I chose the same color scheme for my letter art. I hung the photos above my headboard for the time being.

MAXImize

maxi skirt and tank top
love necklace
{J.Crew tank, Express maxi skirt, Shoemint sandals, Nine West sunnies, M2 Boutique necklaces, gifted bangles & earrings, Pitaya clutch}

Maxi skirts are the one item of clothing that I believe can be worn year around; the versatility that they provide can maximize your closet from season to season. I styled this maxi skirt earlier this year (seen here) in the dead of winter and now that summer is in full swing; I restyled the skirt to fit the weather. The cotton material is breathable and keeps me cool during the humid days, paired with a striped tank, and minimal accessories, it's the perfect outfit for a beach party or an early morning walk to the farmers market.

Happy Summer Solstices!

Pizzafest

chicago pizzafest
Summer in Chicago is a whirlwind of festivals, art shows, and numerous other activities.  I had planned to spend this weekend cleaning and organizing my apartment, but instead my awesome neighbors, Marty and Arvin, invited me to Pizzafest in uptown.   We spent a few hours at the festival and I watched the boys try deep dish pizzas, italian beef sandwiches, and deep fried treats. I'm somewhat wary of street food after a bad experience I had in Europe, so I didn't end up trying as much as they did. I did however have to try the deep friend Oreos, and wow they were amazing!

I highly encourage everyone who comes to visit to check out the summer festival schedule, there are so many different festivals you'll be sure to find one that peaks your interest.

Out to Sea

{Express shirt (old), Old Navy skirt, Anthropologie necklace, Topshop rings, J.Crew headband, Steve Madden wedges}

It was balls hot here in Chicago this past weekend and it truly began to feel like summer has begun! My friend and co-worker Katie came down and visited me and her best friend Amanda for the weekend. Even though Katie and I talk to each other daily; I miss seeing her and so many of my co-workers in the office.  I had so much hanging out with these girls as we explored parts of Chicago that were new to me, got our nails done, and shopped our butts off. I was inspired this weekend by all the boats out on Lake Michigan and chose a nautical outfit; a simple white jean skirt, striped and ruffled navy/white shirt, and comfortable wedges. It was a very girly weekend which included my very first trip to The Cheesecake Factory, which was beyond delicious.

P.S. The heat made most of my makeup slide off by the end of the day and my hair was not a fan of the humidity; oh the joys of summer.

Shades of Grey

{Forever 21 dress; gifted jewelry, Steve Madden sunnies, Jenna Kator "Belle Isle" handbag, Shoemint "Kellie"sandals}

Since I work from home I try to make a conscious effort to not wear yoga pants all day every day, however I still choose an outfit for maximum comfort. I favor the jersey dresses that feel like I'm almost in my yoga pants but can still be dressed up with a few accessories.  By the end of the work day I'm dying to get out of our apartment and Christine (my pretty awesome roommate) been the perfect partner to run errands with or just take a stroll around our neighborhood. I wore this dress last Thursday as we made our way to the local Dairy Queen for our ice cream dinner!  Christine who has been my photographer since I moved to Chicago has done a pretty amazing job taking my photos and being supportive of my blogging so I feel like I lucked out in the roommate/friend department!

On Michigan Avenue

{Madewell tee, H&M skirt (also seen here) & necklace, J.Crew necklace, Fringe bracelet, Jenna Kator handbag, Aldo sandals, Steve Madden sunnies}

Growing up I was taught that everyone has clothes that they wear to church and clothes for everyday wear, these two separate wardrobes shouldn't be mixed. While the rest of my family still abides by this "rule", I have been the rebel of the family and mix it all together.  I maximize my clothes and believe that just about anything can be worn year around with a few simple staple swaps. While it still doesn't feel summer-y  in Chicago yet, as the mornings and evenings are still quite cool; this skirt is the perfect length to keep me from freezing but still  flowy enough to keep me from overheating. Paired with the most comfortable tee I own and some wedge sandals, shopping with my roommate on Michigan Ave. was the stress relief we needed after a hard day at work. Shopping and one of my favorite local beers, summer days are here to stay!
